The match was delayed by some sportsmanship from the opposition at the start who insisted on inspecting all of the boys passports amongst other things. This affected the boys who were slow to get into their stride. The first half was a hard fought battle with Hendred hitting the bar twice and being denied a clearcut penalty when Tom was brought down. Liam was replaced by Luke after an injury.
The second half game alive with some neat exchanges between midfield and attack and Hendred's superiority was shown with Joe, Elias, Callum and Tom carving through the Romanian team who increasingly struggled to contain the quick Hendred attacks. Tom Carter, Luke and Adam remained strong at the back quickly closing down on the Romanian attacks.
Goals from Tom (hatrick), Joe (2) and Elias settled the tie and take Hendred into the quarter finals against another Romanian side who beat Venezuela comfortably earlier in the day. Tough challenges ahead with potentially three games tomorrow. Regardless of the outcome the boys have done us proud.
Off to the bar...
U10s: Harwell & Hendred 5 Konrad Focisuli 0 (Hungary)
The match kicked off at 10am in searing heat - over 100 degrees. The lads recognised the need to take on lots of water and to conserve energy.
The opposition were better than some of their earlier scores in the group suggested and it became clear that this was by no means a walkover for Harwell, already confirmed as group winners.
The refereeing decisions continue to lurch from the totally bizarre to unbelievable - however after a period of sustained pressure the ref finally awarded a penalty to Harwell (after the side had already scored). It was neatly tucked away by Joe. Elias scored a second before half-time.
The lads fitness showed in the second half. Liam had a long shot blocked and Luke put in the rebound. Joe them tore through the middle to get his second of the day and Callum scored the side's 5th goal after a rebound from a Tom Carter shot.
There were lots of substitutions as Mike and Jason sought to keep the side fresh for the last 16 game later in the afternoon. Overall a very professional performance leaving the lads with a 100% record in the group.
This match was between the two unbeaten sides in the group and always promised to be a tough test for the lads. The Slovakian side outsung H&H on the bus to the ground and started the more quickly. The skill and speed of the opposition led to an early period of pressure and both Tom Carter and Liam had to be at their best to stop a number of quick attacks.
H&H started to get into the game and from their first attack Tom slotted the ball calmly home after good work from Joe. This was quickly followed by a second from Tom after a great goal kick by Adam and some good control by Callum. The quick goals quietened the very vocal support from the Slovakian supporters and thankfully gave a respite from the Vuvuzelas. Callum scored direct from a corner and then Joe scored one of the goals of the game with a thundering header into the back of the net. Callum scored again just before halftime with another cool finish. Although a halftime score of 5-0 sounds comfortable the boys and parents knew the match was not necessarily over and the Slovakians emphasized this with a deserved goal just after the break.
There then followed what can only be described as some bizarre refereeing decisions with three blatant penalty appeals for H&h being dismissed. From the third of these the Slovakian side broke and Callum inadvertently tripped the attacking player resulting in a 'sinbin'. This led to sustained pressure from the Slovaks and lad ditch defending from Tom Carter and Liam. On his return to the pitch Callum quickly settled the match with a well taken goal which was followed within a minute by a second for Joe. Luke capped the match off with a smart strike from the edge of the box which flew past the diving keeper.
A slightly flattering scoreline against a very good academy side.
Scorers: Callum (3), Joe (2), Tom (2), Luke (1)

Hungary were a better side than Latvia and the lads responded by upping their game. The searing heat didn't affect the commitment from every player on the pitch.
The speed of counter-attacking from H&H constantly left the Hungarian side in disarray at the back. The ball was neatly switched from flank to flank with Hendred attacks invariably having at least one extra man over. First half goals from Callum, Liam, Tom, Joe and an own goal led to a comfortable half-time scoreline for the boys who are attracting an increasing number of admirers with the quality of their play. The defence looking solid at the back each time the Hungarians pressed forward.
The second half continued in the same vain with Hendred taking almost every chance that presented itself. Second half goals from Joe (2), Tom and Elias saw a second comprehensive victory.
Hungary scored a consolation towards the end but this didn't detract from another superb performance by the boys
U10's: Harwell & Hendred 10 v Saldus Sporta (Latvia) 1
A more extensive match report of the trip will follow on our return from the International Football Festival in Hungary...
So a small village side finally found it's way into European competition and the boys had been tasked with instilling some national pride. The first group game being against the unknown quantity of Saldus Sparta from Latvia. The parents were more nervous than the boys although the needn't have been.
Within minutes of the start Harwell & Hendred were 1-0 up with a goal from Tom Craig - the side playing some neat passing football and breaking with speed. The Latvian side struggled to contain H&H and in particular Joe and Elias. tom went on to score a first half hatrick. Goals from Joe and Elias gave the side a comfortable half time lead.
The side continued where they left off after the break, ignoring the scorching temperatures.
After the break further goals from Joe (2), Tom, Elias and Callum further enhanced the scoreline and had many onlookers comment on the quality of the play. Latvia pulled a goal back midway through the half and Adam had to make a couple of neat saves. A great start to what should be a great tournament.
Final score 10-1: goals Tom (4), Joe (3), Elias (2), Callum
Under 10's vs. Didcot (League match)
Harwell and Hendred vs. Didcot (League match)
First match result: Didcot 1: 2 Harwell and Hendred
After last week’s fantastic performance and a great night on Friday for the Presentation evening the away supporters were expecting big things this week. They were not to be disappointed.
Team sheet: Daniel Potter (GK), Joe Lilley, Liam Kay, Ethan Muldoon, Tom Craig, Callum Rowe and Luke Hayes
The lads started this game at a good pace showing great teamwork throughout, something that perhaps has been a bit of a missing link for some of this season. Tom’s throw down the right side saw Joe turn well and lay it off skillfully for Callum whose run down the right wing saw a powerful shot well saved. Callum had another chance a few minutes later, this time the shot was only slightly too high. From a corner, Ethan managed to get in a header in that was well blocked, but Tom was on hand to slot the ball home to put the lad’s one up just before half time.
Jacob came on for Ethan for the second half. Joe had a good chance early on. The ball was cleared straight away by Didcot and they put together a well worked move that resulted in a fine goal. The lads kept up their concentration and put together a few more chances whilst absorbing some pressure from a rejuvenated Didcot team. Daniel tipped the ball over the bar really well from a fierce Didcot shot. With 5 minutes to go, Joe’s corner was met by Jacob, who in a flash, controlled the ball, turned and buried the ball to seal the win for this part of the fixture.
Second match result: Didcot 1:1Harwell and Hendred
Charley Hunt (GK), Eddie Mackellor, Harry Page, Elias Djaoui, Liam Thomlinson, Jack Sear and Thomas Carter. Subs Lewis “thundershot” Thorne and Jamie Hawkes
Didcot put the lads under pressure early on, but they were kept out by some outstanding play at the back. Charley put in an assured performance in goal that saw the first half end up goal less.
Liam and Charley swapped after half time and Liam saved well from a Didcot shot early in the second half. The lads moved up a gear in the second half with some great battling all over the pitch. Elias took the ball well in the middle of the park and made a strong run down the right side of the pitch. His shot was struck hard and accurately, but the keeper was on hand to make the save. In a near carbon copy of the first match, within a flash the ball was down the other end and Didcot made no mistake as they went one up in this match. HP had a good effort saved and the game ebbed and flowed somewhat for a few minutes. And then, we all witnessed what could be as the defining moment of the season. Lewis and Jamie came on in a near double substitution for Eddie and Charley. With just a few minutes to go the ball was played through to Jamie, who held off a challenge well and passed the ball back to Lewis supporting Jamie on the left side of the pitch. Lewis just had a few seconds to look up and fire the ball straight into the right side of the goal. What a goal it was as the away supporters launched into a few Irish Dancing routines (well I did!). Didcot came back at the lads straight away and they had to deal with a free kick just outside the area. The danger passed and the final whistle was blown.
Everyone enjoyed the smile on Lewis’s face. Mike and Jason were highly delighted and justifiably proud of the lads.
Aggregate Score: Didcot 2: 3 Harwell and Hendred
This match report marks the end of an era. Lewis will go down on the records as scoring the last goal in the last 7 a side league match the lads will ever play. Good for you Lewis and well deserved!
The likely league position at the end of this season is fourth place. A tremendous effort by Mike, Jason and the lads. You’ve given great pleasure, excitement, anguish and been responsible for the onset of a few heart conditions this season. It was great to finish the season on such a high and more importantly with a bunch of lads smiling like Cheshire cats. We all look forward to the 11 a side matches next season.

Under 10's vs. Ardington
Harwell and Hendred vs. Ardington (League match)
First match result: Ardington 1:0 Harwell and Hendred
Team sheet: Charley Hunt (GK), Joe Lilley, Liam Kay, Luke Hayes, Tom Craig, Ethan Muldoon and Callum Rowe.
Second match result: Ardington 1:1 Harwell and Hendred
Andrew Francis (GK), Harry Page, Thomas Carter, Jack Sear, Eddie Mackellor, Elias Djaoui and Liam Thomlinson
A slightly different format for this week’s report. The weather was cold and wet as the teams started this fixture.
To some extent, the football in both games played second fiddle to a bunch of lads whose commitment and dedication to a couple of games of football was an absolute joy to witness. No one could have asked more of them as everyone on the pitch battled away to produce undoubtedly the performance of the season.
The first match saw a succession of close chances, in particular Tom’s header bouncing tantalizingly on the line and Callum’s class header only narrowly high from a Joe Lilley corner. Ardington scored early in the second half, but the determination of the lads to respond immediately made the away crowd really proud. With a bit of luck we could have been three up inside 15 minutes.
Ten minutes into the second match Elias showed some great skill. His shot was blocked, but Jack was on hand to bury the rebound and level the aggregate score. The rest of the match was pretty even, but Ardington sneaked an equalizer early in the second half.
This is not a report to mark out individual performances as the team effort in both games was immense; however, Charley and Andrew deserve a special mention for their willingness to act as stand in keepers.
Well done lads. Well done Mike and Jason.

Harwell and Hendred vs. Botley (League match)
First match result: Botley 1:7 Harwell and Hendred
Team sheet: Daniel Potter (GK), Joe Lilley, Liam Kay, Liam Thomlinson, Luke Hayes, Tom Craig and Callum Rowe.
The lads got off to a brisk start with Joe Lilley’s early shot well saved and Callum’s header only just wide. The Botley keeper made a great double save initially from Joe and then from Liam T’s follow up. Liam was in the thick of the action soon after as his cross was well met by Tom. The shot slid off the post and went wide. Liam K launched the first of a series of aerial attacks on the goal, the first just wide. The first goal came with a long clearance controlled by Tom and put in by Liam T. Callum’s excellent throw in found Joe who put the ball away to double the score. Callum finished the half with a well struck volley that was only just wide.
Within the first 20 seconds of the restart, Callum’s pass found Joe who put the ball away well to make the score 3-0. Tom Craig got on the score sheet next with a well taken goal (4-0). Botley responded well with a long clearance finding the head of the shortest player on the pitch putting the ball beyond an advancing Daniel (4-1). Normal service resumed as Tom Craig put the ball through well to Callum who threaded it intelligently passed the keeper. Liam Kay’s next long shot was only just high. The lads won the ball immediately from the restart and Joe was on hand to put the ball away from Tom’s accurate pass. The favour was returned a moment or two later as Joe cleverly put the ball through and Tom slotted the ball pass the keeper to make the final score 7-1.
Second match result: Botley 0 :2 Harwell and Hendred
Charley Hunt (GK), Harry Page, Thomas Carter, Jack Sear, Eddie Mackellor, Ethan Muldoon and Jacob Rackley.
Charley again found himself in goal standing in from Sam who was in touch with the match thanks to a running commentary from his father. Botley had the better of the initial exchanges, though Jack and Jacob combined well a couple of minutes into the game. The game somewhat ebbed and flowed for the remainder of the first half with both teams launching attacks, though it was the lads that looked the most likely to score.
More chances were created in the second half with Jack creating several opportunities for Ethan and Jacob. Eddie saw his shot go just wide. He then became the provider for Jack whose shot from wide on the right whipped straight into the corner of the net to open the scoring. Botley responded immediately but were thwarted with a couple of excellent saves from Charley. Good work form Jack and Eddie saw the ball sit up nicely for Ethan who put the ball away clinically to make the score 2-0 just before the close.

Under 10 Match Report vs. Summertown Galaxy
Harwell and Hendred vs. Summertown Galaxy (League match)
First match result: Harwell and Hendred 2:0 Summertown Galaxy
Easter holidays necessitated some juggling with the teams this week. I’m sure the whole squad and parents wish to send our best wishes and speedy recovery to Sam Bradley. We look forward to seeing him between the posts as soon as possible. Congratulations to Andrew Francis for his selection into the county cricket squad.
Team sheet: Daniel Potter (GK), Joe Lilley, Liam Kay, Lewis Thorne, Ethan Muldoon, Tom Craig and Eddie Mackellor
The lads made a bright start to this match with early chances from Joe after some good work from Tom. Summertown went clean through, but couldn’t convert the chance. H and H responded immediately with a well worked moved from the back, through to Eddie who used the ball really well and passed it through to Tom on goal. His shot was blocked, but Ethan was on hand to put away the rebound. Within two minutes the lads were on the attack again this time with some excellent work from Joe Lilley who threaded the ball through to Tom’s neat work doubled the lead just before half time.
The second half was a scrappier affair with injuries to a couple of players and Summertown enjoying more possession, however it was still Harwell and Hendred who looked the more likely team to score. Chances from Joe were either over the bar or well saved.
Second match result: Harwell and Hendred 0:2 Summertown Galaxy
Charley Hunt (GK), Luke Hayes, Callum Rowe, Harry Page, Thomas Carter, Jamie Hawkes and Liam Thomlinson
Charley stepped up to take over in goal and had a fine game with some assured kicking and coming off his line well at crucial times. Summertown were on top throughout this match and it was no surprise as they took the lead half way through the first half. Nothing quite went to plan for the lads in this entire match. A couple of passes here and there would have made so much difference, but it looked as if it was going to be one of those days.
In the second half Summertown dominated even more. With two minutes to go a thumping header rattled the cross bar. The home crowd was willing the clock to move faster, but it was not to be as Summertown went two up to draw the fixture level with the last kick of the game.

Harwell and Hendred vs. Grove (League match)
First match result: Grove 0:2 Harwell and Hendred
Team sheet: Team: Sam Bradley (GK), Thomas Carter, Lewis Thorne, Elias Djaoui, Ethan Muldoon , Andrew Francis and Charley Hunt.
Early efforts from Elias and Ethan were just wide or well saved. Sam saved well from a free kick mid way into the half. A great passing move saw a further chance for Ethan who was working hard on the right side if the pitch. Andrew’s shot was blocked well on the line. Ethan had a shot that rattled the post.
Within a couple of minutes of the restart Elias found himself clean through. He made no mistake and slotted the ball passed the keeper. Elias doubled his tally a few minutes from time with another well taken goal.
Second match result: Grove 0:4 Harwell and Hendred
Daniel Potter (GK), Luke Hayes, Liam Kay, Tom Craig, Callum Rowe, Harry Page and Eddie Mackellor. Jamie Hawkes (sub).
An early glancing header from Tom from a Callum corner was the first scoring opportunity in this match. Tom was the provider for HP (playing in Centre midfield) who put the ball across the line to open his account for the day. Some rather flat looking football was tempered with some great moves and it was one of these that led to the second goal. Tom was again the provider this time for Callum to tap in.
Jamie came on for Eddie in the second half. Callum added to his goal count with a free kick that went straight in from a relatively wide position. Daniel made a brave save a few minutes from time smothering the ball really well. Towards the end of the match Callum’s well struck shot was half blocked and followed up well by HP to make the score 4-0.

First match result: Horspath 0:0 Harwell and Hendred
Team sheet: Team: Sam Bradley (GK), Thomas Carter, Harry Page, Elias Djaoui, Ethan Muldoon , Andrew Francis and Charley Hunt. Jacob Rackley (sub) and Liam Thomlinson (sub)
This match was a great spectacle with both teams competing right across the pitch for the entire match. The lads had the dominate share of possession during the first half, but couldn’t convert the 2 or 3 chances that came their way. Sam made a fantastic save from a fierce goal bound shot at the end of the 1st half.
Jacob came on for Charley and Liam came on for Ethan for the second half. Horspath were more in the game at this point and hit the post. With two minutes to go Horspath were awarded a penalty. The shot was well struck but Sam launched himself across the goal and forced the ball wide for another powerful save. The match concluded as a really enjoyable goalless draw.
Second match result: Horspath 6:0 Harwell and Hendred
Daniel Potter (GK), Luke Hayes, Liam Kay, Tom Craig, Callum Rowe, Joe Lilley and Eddie Mackellor. Jamie Hawkes and Lewis Thorne (subs).
A very different match followed. The lads found themselves 3 down within 3 minutes. The competition appeared seemingly over at this point and frankly it appeared that many of the team were going through the motions. Jamie came on for Eddie in the second half. Lewis came on for Tom towards the end of the match before which another three goals had been conceded.
This was always going to be a tough, physical fixture and so it turned out to be. One team appeared up for the challenge, the other (arguably playing a better team) fell four from home to use an analogy from the Cheltenham meeting this last week. Come on lads – you are so, so much better than that.

Harwell and Hendred vs. Summertown Stars (League match)
First match result: Harwell and Hendred 6:1 Summertown Stars
Team sheet: Daniel Potter (GK), Luke Hayes, Liam Kay, Tom Craig, Callum Rowe, Joe Lilley and Jamie Hawkes. Eddie Mackellor (sub). After a series of postponed matches after a difficult winter it was great to see the lads underway again.
This was a match of two very distinct halves. The lads found themselves one behind right from the start as a penalty was conceded for hand ball. The response was perhaps the worst performance of the last 2 years let alone this season. However, the last two minutes of the first half showed a taste of what was to come in the second half with the first two passing movements of the game resulting in two scoring opportunities.
A stern talking to at half time did the trick. Eddie came on for Jamie. A different team came out after the interval and started knocking the ball around to each other all over the park. Daniel’s long kick out was well controlled by Tom who selflessly knocked the ball across for Joe to put away and level the scores. Tom had his reward moments later as he was the benefactor of a rejuvenated Callum who passed the ball perfectly across to Tom. Some great control and neat finishing saw the lads take the lead in the match. The lads were well on top now and there was only ever going to be one winner of this match. Callum was again the provider as Eddie hit the ball sweetly into the bottom left corner. Callum had a great shot brilliantly saved by the keeper. Eddie made his presence felt on the right side and laid the ball across to Tom who again showed good skill to do round the keeper and score. Tom completed his hatrick moments later as he neatly turned in his third goal from a corner kick. From the restart Joe control of the ball and launched a goal bound shot only to see it saved on the line by a Summertown defender. Tom got his fourth towards the end of the game after some clever work by Callum. In the dying moments Liam launched a well struck effort from distance only to see it go just wide.
A fantastic response to a truly dreadful first half.
Second match result: Harwell and Hendred 2:0 Summertown Stars
Team: Sam Bradley (GK), Thomas Carter, Lewis Thorne, Elias Djaoui, Liam Thomlinson, Andrew Francis and Charley Hunt. Ethan Muldoon (sub)
There was a flurry of chances for the home side in the first half of this match. Charley found himself perfectly positioned for several chances, but the goal wouldn’t come. Andrew saw his first shot go wide of the left post. Summertown responded well and missed an open goal towards the end of the first half. Further chances from Elias and Andrew bought the first half to a conclusion. Mike encouraged the lads to plug away and the goal would come. Ethan came on for Liam in a straight swap. He made his mark as he took over Liam’s role of provider down that side of the pitch.
Thomas made a good covering tackle during a well executed move from the visitors. Sam made a great save when Summertown looked favourites to score. AF had a shot blocked and the rebound go just wide. Was it going to be a goalless match? Ethan had other ideas as he did well on the right side and fed the ball to Charley who neatly turned and fired the ball across the goal to be put in by Andrew to open the scoring. Andrew’s free kick was just wide soon after, but Elias made sure of the match after winning the ball well and launching a great strike into the corner to make the score 2-0.

Under 10 Match Report vs Chalgrove
Harwell and Hendred vs. Chalgrove (League match)
First match result: Harwell and Hendred 9:0 Chalgrove
Team sheet: Team: Sam Bradley (GK), Thomas Carter, Harry Page, Elias Djaoui, Liam Thomlinson, Andrew Francis and Charley Hunt. Jacob Rackley (sub) and Jamie Hawkes (sub)
After a series of postponed matches after a difficult winter it was great to see the lads underway again.
Elias opened the scoring after a well taken shot from HP was saved. Two minutes later Elias was in the thick of the action again as he put in a great cross to Charley who made no mistake in front of the posts to make the score 2-0. Liam was having a great day at the office as he battled away down the right side of the pitch. Elias became the provider for Liam whose shot was well blocked and then again for Charley who turned in his second. Just before half time a well struck free kick was turned in by the Chalgrove defender at the near post to make the half time score 4-0 to the home team.
Andrew resumed where he left off at the start of the second half as his shot was driven low into the left corner of the pitch to make the score 5-0. Andrew came off and was replaced in a straight swap with Jamie making his debut. Soon after, Charley came off for Jacob. Both substitutes had an immediate impact as Jamie won the ball well down the left side of the pitch to start a move of three exceptionally well-worked passes that culminated in Jacob burying the ball to make it 6-0. Chalgrove to their great, great credit carried on with a full 100% effort in all areas of the pitch. The three players at the back namely, Tom, HP and Sam looked solid, comfortable and in control at all times. Jacob had two further chances in quick succession, the first saw his great shot well blocked. Liam was on hand for the rebound to make the score 7-0. Jacob’s next shot was just a few inches (sorry lads – just a few 2.5cm over the bar). Elias was always in the thick of the action and resumed his provider role as he crossed across to Jamie who buried the ball to score on his debut. 8-0. The two subs finished their highly influential performance with Jamie’s cross to Jacob. Jacob made no mistake as he buried the ball to make the final score 9-0.
Second match result: Harwell and Hendred 4:0 Chalgrove
Daniel Potter (GK), Luke Hayes, Liam Kay, Tom Craig, Callum Rowe, Joe Lilley and Ethan Muldoon. Eddie Mackellor, Lewis Thorne and Jack Sear (subs.)
The performance in this match was solid and committed. Tom Craig saw his early shot well clocked. Ethan playing on the right of the pitch soon found himself in the area. A smart turn and shot saw the first goal of this game. From a goal kick some good work on the left side of the pitch by Callum saw Tom Craig with the ball. His shot was well saved, by Joe was on hand to bury the rebound to make it 2-0. Chalgrove looked more organized in this match and made things more difficult as the match went on. Further chances from Ethan and Tom resulted in some good work in the middle of the pitch. Liam and Luke looked good at the back. Liam had the first of three near misses as he put in a guest appearance in the opposition half!. Luke pushed up a bit giving the front players further options. Tom saw his next shot beat the keeper to make it 3-0. The last move of the first half saw Callum’s shot blocked only for that well know goal poacher Joe to be ideally placed to turn in the loose ball to make the score 4-0 at half time.
The second half saw some changes throughout as Eddie came on for Callum, Jack on for Tom and Lewis on for Luke. Some good passages of play resulted, though no goals to add to the tally. Daniel was on hand for one save and a couple of goal kicks. Eddie did well on the left side. His cross to Joe was only narrowly wide. Jack did what Jack does best with his terrier style of play making his presence felt at all times. Lewis slotted in well at the back.
A great fixture this morning enjoyed by home players and supporters. Let’s hope for this weather to continue.

Harwell and Hendred vs. Abingdon (League match)
First match result: Harwell and Hendred 2:0 Abingdon
Team sheet: Team: Sam Bradley (GK), Thomas Carter, Harry Page, Elias Djaoui, Liam Thomlinson, Andrew Francis and Jacob Rackley. Jack Sear (sub)
The weather has prevented a decent run of matches since the Christmas break. After the disappointment of the Cholsey game, it was crucial the lads put on a good display today. They did not disappoint in any way.
Elias opened the scoring with a great run on the left side of the field. His shot was low, hard and accurate beating an excellent keeper. Abingdon responded with a sustained period of pressure, but HP and Thomas were most assured at the back and no clear cut scoring opportunities occurred. The whole team was playing well and most importantly putting in 100% effort at all times. Elias was unlucky to see his next shot on goal going into the side netting after a well taken corner. HP saw his looping cross into the area only a few inches too high for Jacob to get his head on. A fantastic passage of play involving half the team saw Jacob hold the ball up well, make the pass and run on for the return pass before being felled just outside the area. Andrew delivered a high quality free kick that was goal bound from the moment it left his boot, however, the Abingdon keeper was on great form as he guided the ball over the area at full stretch. A great free kick and a fantastic save.
Jacob made a couple of really good contributions in the second half. Jack came on for Jacob later on. Elias had another shot well saved but moments later he delivered a low shot, this time in the right corner to double the lead. The team was really playing well at this point. After a series of fouls Andrew had two free kicks within 2 minutes. His first was a clever and well disguised chip across the area which only needed a tap in from a team mate. The second free kick was a more conventional accurate shot that again was very well saved.
The match finished soon after with a team performance that was great to watch and even more pleasurable to write about.
Second match result: Harwell and Hendred 2:0 Abingdon
Daniel Potter (GK), Luke Hayes, Liam Kay, Tom Craig, Callum Rowe, Joe Lilley and Eddie Mackellor. Lewis Thorne (sub)
The first match team had set a great example of team work. It was great to watch a second match that showed the same level of commitment and hard work as the preceding 40 minutes.
Eddie, Joe and Callum all had chances early on, but 7 minutes into the match Callum launched a shot, conversion, torpedo, lob (delete as appropriate) from just over the half way line that looped over the keeper to open the scoring in a most spectacular way, much to the enjoyment of all the home supporters. (Mike has his measuring stick out ready to accurately retell the story to his mates down the pub tonight!).
Abingdon responded well and Daniel produced the first of a pair of brilliant saves. Abingdon corners were defended well. At the end of the half the Abingdon centre forward made a great run and was clean through. His shot looked like being the equalizer, but Daniel was on hand to produce arguably his best ever save as he instinctively blocked the ball with his leg.
Into the second half the home team looked even more assured. Liam and Luke did well and it was great to hear Daniel making his presence felt directing operations at the back. There were a couple of chances for the home team, in particular some great work by Tom led to a great cross to Joe whose shot was just too high.
Lewis came on for Tom and was full of running. Some well worked moves saw Lewis well positioned for a couple of shots. Both were wide or saved, but the third opportunity saw him bury the ball into the corner to make the match and fixture beyond doubt.
At the close of play one of the Abingdon parents took the trouble to compliment the lads on a match that showed great organization and commitment – how right he was!

Harwell and Hendred vs. Crowmarsh (League match)
First match result: Harwell and Hendred 0: 2 Crowmarsh
Team sheet: Team: Daniel Potter (GK), Luke Hayes, Liam Kay, Tom Craig, Joe Lilley, Jacob Rackley and Callum Rowe
After the excitement of last week it was time to get back to business this week. The first period of the first half was brisk in pace, though lacking in quality. There were no clear cut chances at all to report on and this perhaps was the catalyst for the lads to turn in on themselves and forget that football is a team sport. A goalless first half concluded with some weary looking faces evident at the team talk.
Our defence on the whole looked pretty solid and Luke delivered perhaps his finest performance of the season showing bravery and total commitment. Crowmarsh took the lead from a corner kick that wasn’t cleared. Eddie came on for Jacob. Towards the end of the game Crowmarsh broke in numbers and at pace. By the time the ball was in the net there were still three H and H players in the Crowmarsh half. Tom had a couple of half chances at the end, but the Crowmarsh keeper was not called on to make a save.
What a disappointment this match was. After last week’s fantastic performance this was a match for consolidation and building on last week’s success.

It was good to welcome back HP to the side. Mike impressed upon the lads the importance of this match. Crowmarsh took the lead with a well worked move up the centre of the pitch. Elias responded with a tremendous run that saw him beat three players and drill the ball into the net for the equalizer. There was plenty of effort in this match, but nothing seemed to gel for long periods of this half. Andrew worked really well down the left side of the pitch. Tom and HP looked assured at the back.
Mike’s team talk was necessarily harsh and to the point. There was too much larking around going on and not the concentration necessary to rescue this fixture. The team talk worked a treat as a more focused team came out in the second half and began to dominate. Liam came off unwell and was replaced by an in form Lewis who made his presence felt straight away with some great crosses right across the area. The confusion caused by one of Lewis’s crosses saw Elias on the ball. His shot was directed beautifully into the top corner of the net to put the lads within one goal of leveling the aggregate scores. Elias was on fire as he completed his hatrick with another well taken long shot.
This game was not over yet by any means. No sooner had the celebrations died down to mark a great comeback when Crowmarsh were awarded a corner. The ball went straight into the goal from the corner, stunning the players and the crowd alike. This was a test of character and the lads came through it well as they kept going and piled the pressure on at the other end. Another cross from Lewis caused panic in the Crowmarsh area. A bit of a scramble ensued before the ball was put into the net by a Crowmarsh player bringing the aggregate scores level. Both teams had chances to nick the fixture in the last couple of minutes notably with Andrew’s free kick, however, the final whistle came and bought to an end an entertaining but frustrating fixture.
Aggregate Score: Harwell and Hendred 4:4 Crowmarsh

Harwell and Hendred vs. Horspath (League match)
First match result: Harwell and Hendred 3: 2 Horspath
Team sheet: Team: Daniel Potter (GK), Luke Hayes, Liam Kay, Tom Craig, Joe Lilley, Eddie Mackellor and Jacob Rackley
Firstly, a glaring omission from last week’s report. I’m sure the whole squad, management and parents want to pass on their best wishes to HP and hope we’ll see him on that pitch again with his trade mark smile very soon.
After last week’s result, this was going to be a crucial fixture for the lads. So it turned out to be …….
Despite the amount of rain in the last 24 hours the pitch was in reasonably good condition. Mike and Jason changed the teams around a bit this week with Eddie and Callum swapping teams and Jacob starting the first match. The early play saw both teams try and put their mark to the match. The lads had the best of the early chances notably Joe who’s shot was just wide after good work from Eddie and Tom, however, it was clear that Horspath were always going to be a challenge on the break and so it turned out as they cleverly weaved the ball down the pitch to be clear through and put the shot pass Daniel to open the scoring. The lads responded magnificently with some great work from Jacob battling away and going in hard as we all know he is so capable of doing. Liam won the ball well deep in his own half. He played the ball smartly up to Tom who then provided a fantastic pass for Joe to run on to. Moving at pace Joe buried the ball in the net to level the scores just before half time.
With this match nicely poised Mike gave a rousing team talk at half time. The lads certainly started the second half the brighter and more inventive team. This time it was Luke who found Tom. His skill was evident for all to see as he again was the provider for Joe who as we expected made no mistake as he put the home team one goal to the good. Horspath was always a threat and again a break at pace saw Daniel come out really well to deny Horspath a clear shot at goal. There were only a few minutes left, but enough time for some crucial passages of play. From a throw in Tom found himself through and he showed huge maturity as he put the ball beyond the keeper to build up a 2 goal cushion. Horspath came straight back at them. Thanks to a smart move from a corner and some ropy marking they slotted the ball home to put them only one down by the end of the match.
Second match result: Harwell and Hendred 1: 1 Horspath

Liam was unwell, but still came to support his team mates. This team in particular had a point to prove after last week. To be honest, the lads rode their luck as Horspath became almost camped in the H and H half for large parts of the first period. There was no lack of effort, but all the attacking moves came to nothing as Horspath managed to snuff out all the lads best moves. Callum and Tom were kept extremely busy. Callum was making his debut in defence. You wouldn’t have known this as his tackling and positional play was excellent. On the one occasion that Horspath got through Tom Carter was on hand to make one of the best covering tackles of the season. The match was goalless at the end of the first half. Mike had obviously looked up page 35 in the book of motivational half time talks. The lads were a different team in the second half.
Lewis came on for Ethan. Horspath broke well, again at pace and there was a definite lack of commitment as they went straight through to take the lead in this match and level the fixture score. That’s enough criticism, as this seemed to inspire the lads and they started to knock the ball around the park with great skill and soon looked a really accomplished side. Elias had a great shot that went just wide. Was this to be a crucial point in the fixture? Elias responded again with some great skill in the area, and produced a shot that looked goal bound. Again, it was just wide causing the blood pressure to rise in certain parts of the crowd (OK me!). Andrew got into his stride and started to reak havoc down the left flank. Elias created yet another chance for himself after showing some silky skills, though this effort was well saved by the Horspath keeper. Lewis contributed to the drama with a well struck shot that was only inches wide. And then the defining part of the entire fixture. Lewis took a throw in that came eventually to Tom Carter. Tom looked up and put in a fantastic cross field ball to Andrew. With no more than 2 seconds to go, Andrew struck the ball with power, accuracy and a hell of a lot of contributing prayers from the home supporters. There was no doubt as he struck it. The ball lodged itself into the top left corner of the goal. What a shot. What a goal! Although the game restarted, there was only time for a couple of passes as the game was bought to an end and a remarkable fixture victory against a really organized and talented team.
Aggregate Score: Harwell and Hendred 4:3 Horspath
Footnote: The X factor may have JEdward, but on the basis of the season so far the team has produced some other great! partnerships. Let’s look out for Lukiam, ToJoe, CharLiam, Tollum (on the basis of today) and let’s not forget our two lads with the gloves SaDan.

Harwell and Hendred vs. Summertown Galaxy (Cup match)
First match result: Summertown Galaxy 2: 4 Harwell and Hendred
Team sheet: Team: Daniel Potter (GK), Luke Hayes, Liam Kay, Tom Craig, Callum Rowe, Joe Lilley, and Jack Sear. Ethan Muldoon and Euan Springett (Subs)
Weather conditions were again not the best, however, the lads played well right from the start in this match.
A smart move from Callum down the right saw him pass to Joe. His cross was inch perfect into the area. Jack was unlucky to miss the header though he was perfectly positioned. Soon after Joe saw his header go over the bar after a great delivery from Tom. The scoring was opened in the end by Callum after he drilled the ball in from a wide position. Whether it was a cross or a shot was irrelevant, the ball was in the back of the net (tell everybody it was a shot Callum!). Five minutes later Tom and Jack combined really well and caused panic in the Summertown area. The result, an own goal, thus putting the lads two up. There were an inordinate number of stoppages for injuries, shoe laces and this made the half a real marathon for all concerned. The lads did well to keep their composure and maintain their concentration. With almost the last move of the half, Daniels smart kick out saw Callum cross the ball to Tom. His low drilled shot was goal bound from the moment it left his boot ending a highly satisfactory if not far too long first period.
The second half began at a fair pace from both teams, though H and H maintained their ascendancy with a highly skillful goal from Tom beating two players before shooting from wide. Summertown came back into the match and they were given too much room as a deflected shot gave Daniel no chance. There had been a great defensive platform in this match and this had given the rest of the team the confidence to move forward in numbers.
Ethan came on the left side after Jack got a whack in the face. Euan came on for Luke for the last few minutes. A defensive error led to Summertown scoring at the end of a long match.
Second match result: Summertown Galaxy 4: 1 Harwell and Hendred

After the lads had applied some early pressure Summertown counter attacked in numbers and gave Sam no chance as they opened the scoring in this match. Summertown were definitely buoyed up by the goal and they dominated the rest of the half though failed to add to the score by half time. In the second half Eddie came on for Liam. Andrew put in some good work down the left hand side and his cross found Eddie, whose shot was just wide. After this it was all Summertown. Andrew cleared the ball off the line and a shot soon after hit the post and spun across the mouth of the goal before going out. There was some respite as Tom Carter pushed the ball out to Eddie. His cross was not dealt with apart from being put in the goal by a Summertown defender. This goal was either going to inspire one team or the other. On this occasion Summertown responded well and played their best football of the game. They went two one up soon after. Elias came off for Jacob. Summertown won a corner scored a goal from close range from the loose ball. Charley went off injured and Elias returned to the field, but there was nothing to be done as a long pass up field found the Summertown striker on form to put the ball in the net provoking a reaction from the Summertown Manager that I’m sure on reflection he regrets. This turned out to be the last incident of the game.
Let’s see all guns blazing for the next game.

A curtailed report this week due to a wet, cold and wimpy reporter!
The lads opened this match with some good skills shown, despite the appalling weather conditions. Summertown were first to open the scoring with an own goal following a goal mouth scramble. Within a minute of the restart, some excellent work by Jack down the left side of the pitch culminated in him winning a foul on the left edge of the area. Tom stood up to take the kick and looped it in over the keepers head to equalize. Joe arrived in the area at just the right time to put the lad’s one goal ahead. Jack then made it three showing some excellent control in the area.
In the second half Callum provided and excellent cross into the area straight to Joe, who made no mistake in burying the ball past a diving keeper. Summertown were given too much room as they produced a long shot to pull the scores back to 4:2. Callum won the ball well on the right side of the field. His shot was well blocked by the Stars keeper, but Joe was again on hand to put in the rebound and gain his hatrick. Callum wasn’t to be denied as within a few minutes he found his shot only half saved and then into the goal. Ethan came on for Jack. Daniel made a great save towards the end of the match when Summertown attacked in numbers. There were two notable performances in this match. Liam was on top form in defence (OK I’m biased) and Jack showed a lot of maturity, passion and commitment down the left side of the pitch.

The lads did well to keep themselves warm and raring to go for this match, though the overhead conditions had marginally improved. From the kick off Andrew had made a run down the left wing. His inch perfect cross was delivered to Liam who calmly controlled the ball and put it in to open the scoring. Andrew himself fired in great shot minutes later to make it two nil. By half time the score could have been higher, but the Summertown keeper was playing out of his skin.
Into the second half Liam came off for a breather and Euan (known initially as the lad who’s Dad had a big green brolly came on). Andrew had a part in the third goal as his shot rebounded off the post and was put in for an own goal. Lewis came on for Eddie for the last few minutes. After a period of play when the ball seemed to go between each keeper, Charley found himself put clean through. A previous effort in a similar situation had been well saved, but he buried the ball on this occasion to make it four nil. The match came to an end soon after.

This fixture swapped venues as the Harwell pitch was deemed unplayable.
Mike and Jason had a little re-jig of the teams following last week’s defeat. Harwell and Hendred were on the attack from start with Tom’s through ball to Joe. Joe’s shot was saved and the rebound saw Callum’s shot go just wide. Soon after Tom’s shot was well saved. The ball went down the other end and after a throw in the ball was loose on the edge of the H and H area. The shot was well struck and Summertown took the lead against the early run of play. Summertown gained a lot of confidence from the goal and pushed forward. Dan saved a long shot well. From the goal kick Tom won the ball well in mid field and threaded the ball through to find Joe clean through. He calmly took the ball around the keeper and buried his shot to level the scores. The game rather ebbed and flowed for the rest of the half with both sides threatening at times, though on balance the lad’s had the majority of the chances.
In the second half there followed a rather controversial incident. Joe was felled in the Summertown area and he did really well to recover and carry on and finish the match. No penalty was given (I’m not saying a thing- other than referee’s do a really difficult job and we should remember that no one makes them give up their time to officiate at matches, mind you if that wasn’t a penalty, my name is Luke Skywalker –oops, I just couldn’t control myself).
Eddie came off soon after. Luke took his role on the left side of midfield and Lewis came on in defence. Liam and Lewis provided the defensive platform for the lads to build a sustained period of pressure on the Summertown goal with further chances from Tom, Joe and Callum, however, Summertown were a really mobile team and defended well in numbers. With a cruel twist of fate, Summertown won the ball really well in the middle of the park and put together a smart move culminating in a fierce shot giving Dan no chance as they restored their lead.
Joe and Tom had further chances towards the end of the game. Eddie came back on as Tom picked up an injury. Joe’s shot in the last few seconds was saved well by the Summertown keeper. This competitive and controversial match was bought to a conclusion with the home team one goal up.

There was so much to play for in the second game of this fixture and the lad’s displayed a fantastic level of commitment right from the start. Liam had a couple of early chances, one well saved by the keeper. Summertown responded well and they played the ball down to the H and H area. Their shot was well stopped by Sam, but he just couldn’t gather it. The resulting scramble saw an own goal conceded. This gave the home team breathing space as they were now 2 goals up on aggregate. Despite this Summertown did not rest on their laurels. H and H put together several passages of play that exuded quality. Fantastic passing, fantastic moving and great positional play. Andrew won a penalty as he was bought down in the area. His kick was saved, but the rebound was put away to level the scores for this match. Charley, Liam and Elias worked their socks off and all three had chances either saved or off the bar. Charley and Liam showed great understanding as they combined superbly well together. Elias worked like a trouper covering every blade of grass of the pitch. Andrew had a fierce shot into the side netting. Some great defending initially by Thomas Carter and then brilliantly followed up by HP started a great move as the ball came to Liam on the right. He did really well to thread the ball through to Charley, whose control was fantastic. His shot found the back of the net to put the lads one up in this match and bring the aggregate scores level. Half time was called.
The lads were playing up the slope in the second half. The half couldn’t have started better as a great goal kick from Sam found Andrew on the left. Andrew’s cross was inch perfect to Charley gathered the ball and shot well. His shot was saved, but Liam was following in and he put the ball in the net to open up an aggregate lead for the lads.
Charley, Andrew and Liam all had further chances, but none better than Elias who threaded his way through only to see his shot from 6 ft (sorry – 2 meters) strike the post and go wide. Was this going to prove costly? Elias didn’t need to redeem himself as his contribution had already been superb. However, he found himself tracking back the whole length of the pitch and pulling off a wonderful defensive move that without doubt saved a goal.
The resulting corner unfortunately saw a great shot buried into the corner of the net leveling the aggregate score. Another attack from the lads saw Elias on the opposition goal line. He weaved his way around at least two players and shot from an impossible angle as it seemed – though it obviously wasn’t impossible for him as the shot found the far corner of the net. What a goal!
Andrew succumbed to injury and was replaced by Jacob. Joe Fowler came on for Liam. The last few minutes was a bit of a scramble, but the whistle bought to an end a competitive, controversial and looking back on it a highly entertaining fixture.

Harwell and Hendred vs. Didcot (League match)
First match result: Harwell and Hendred 0:2 Didcot
Team sheet: Team: Daniel Potter (GK), Luke Hayes, Liam Kay, Andrew Francis, Callum Rowe, Joe Lilley, Charley Hunt, Lewis Thorne (Sub)
After a well observed minutes silence the first match got underway. Conditions were soft underneath. The lads made a good start and there were good passages of play from both sides early on indicating a good competitive fixture was in store. H and H had a series of corners, but it was clear early on the Didcot keeper was on form. Liam and Luke needed to be on good form to keep the Didcot front line subdued. The lads at the front battled away on both flanks and through the middle looking for a scoring opportunity. Joe Lilley had a couple efforts, just wide of the right post as did Callum and Andrew.
Then, there followed an incident that was to define this whole fixture. Didcot won a corner but was well cleared by Luke and Liam. The ball found its way through to Joe and he was clean through. His shot was hard an accurate, but unfortunately for him it was greeted with a top quality save from the Didcot keeper. The rebound went over the bar. The first half concluded.
The second half was only a couple of minutes old when Joe hit the post. Soon after, Didcot got quickly on to a poor goal kick and buried the ball past a diving Daniel to open the scoring. H and H had the majority of the chances for the rest of the half, but nothing found its way over the line. Charley even tried one of his turn and shoot specials – but this week to no avail. Lewis came on for Luke for the closing minutes of the game. Then, as if to pile on the pain, Didcot’s corner in the last 30 seconds of the match went pretty much straight in at the near post to conclude a thoroughly frustrating game for the home team.
Second match result: Harwell and Hendred 1:1 Didcot
Sam Bradley (GK), Harry Page, Thomas Carter, Elias Djaoui, Eddie Mackellor, Tom Craig, Liam Thomlinson, Euan Springett (sub).
The lads need to get into this game right from the start if they were going to save anything from this fixture. Tom Craig had a free kick go just over the bar. Tom’s next contribution was a corner that found Liam Thomlinson’s perfectly directed header on to the back post and in. There followed pretty much a barrage of chances from Elias, Tom, Liam and Eddie, but none found the back of the net. Notably Liam nearly repeated his first effort as his header from tom’s corner went agonizingly wide.
In the second half Didcot were much more assertive and some good defending from Thomas and HP was required. Elias did well to get back and defend well when Didcot were clean through. Then, the final nail in the coffin. Didcot were awarded a penalty in the closing 5 minutes. Sam went the right way, but the penalty was struck low and in the corner to draw the scores level in this fixture. A couple of half chances at the end from Elias bought the match to a conclusion.

First match result: Abingdon Youth 1: 1Harwell and Hendred
Team sheet: Daniel Potter (GK), Liam Kay, Luke Hayes, Joe Lilley, Callum Rowe, Jacob Rackley, Charley Hunt (Lewis Thorne and Jack Sear subs.)
Abingdon were looking to avenge their defeat from last week’s cup match. Mike kept the teams broadly similar as last weekend.
There was a bright start to this match and both teams showed plenty of commitment from the outset. Liam put in a couple of good passes and Callum showed Aaron Lennon the art of decent crossing very early in the match. There was definitely an edge to this fixture. The lads built from deep and the ball found Joe Lilley who turned it into the area into the path of Charley Hunt (note the name correct this week!) who buried the ball to open the scoring for the away team. Abingdon responded straight away with a chance that went just wide. They maintained the pressure throughout the first half. Luke looked solid at the back keeping tight on his man and cutting out the danger from the right side of the pitch. Joe and Callum worked well on the right side ensuring the home team didn’t have everything their own way by any means. Luke’s low shot bought the first half to a close.
Joe Lilley saw his free kick go just wide at the start of the second half. Abingdon responded well with a well organised and executed attack down the left wing. The ball was crossed and turned in to level the scores. The match remained tight throughout the remainder of the second half, but it was definitely the lads who had the majority of the chances. Jack Sear came on for Jacob and hassled his way around the left wing. The element of team work that had been a bit lacking in previous matches came together really well in this match. This added to the competitiveness of the lads in a tight physical game. Lewis came on for Luke and immediately got into the groove with a couple of good tackles at the end of the match.
Second match result: Abingdon Youth 0:2 Harwell and Hendred
Team: Sam Bradley (GK), Harry Page, Thomas Carter, Tom Craig, Elias Djaoui, Eddie Mackeller, Andrew Francis, (Subs. Ethan Muldoon and Liam Thomlinson)
With a draw in the first game there was plenty of work to do if the lads were to get anything out of this fixture. Eddie did well on the right side of the pitch and his cross bounced off an Abingdon defender into the goal to put the lad’s one up in the aggregate score. Harwell and Hendred were certainly in a physical encounter with some interesting interpretation of the rules of football on display. To their great credit the lads did really well to keep their heads and concentrate on their game. Elias had a shot go just wide towards the end of the first half. Abingdon looked threatening on the attack, but HP and Thomas were on hand to deal with most of the pressure.
The second half started at a great pace. This pace was maintained throughout the rest of the match. Tom Craig did really well on the left side of the pitch. His perfectly weighted cross saw Andrew on hand to launch the ball into the net to put the lads two up and establish some breathing space for the rest of the game. Ethan came on for Andrew in a straight swap on the left wing. Liam Thomlinson came on for Tom Craig. Harwell and Hendred had several opportunities to try out their free kicks, but there was no addition to the score by the end of a hard fought match.

First match result: Harwell and Hendred 1:0 Abingdon Youth
Team sheet: Sam Bradley (GK), Harry Page, Thomas Carter, Tom Craig, Elias Djaoui, Liam Thomlinson, Eddie Mackeller. (Sub. Ethan Muldoon)
The match started just as the rain started falling ensuring tricky conditions for this fixture. A pretty uneventful first few minutes ensued with some scrappy, but close fought play from both sides. Tom Craig mad a few excellent turn and run moves on the left side and it was the third of these moves that saw him pass the ball to Eddie who in turn threaded the ball into the path of Elias who buried the ball for a well taken goal. The Abingdon keeper had certainly had his share of the shredded wheat this morning as he kept things tight at the back for the rest of the half. Sam was largely redundant, but did well on a couple of occasions to keep the home team one up.
The second half saw a couple of half chances from Thomas Carter and Tom Craig, however the most notable incidents involved two free kicks from Tom Craig, both on target for the top corner, but both really well saved by the Abingdon keeper. Elias had a header well saved soon after. Liam worked hard on the right side of the pitch. HP and Thomas Carter kept things tight at the back. Ethan came on for Liam and did well, providing a couple of great passes that started some promising attacks. Abingdon applied some good pressure towards the end of the match, but the final whistle blew and bought to a conclusion a hard fought competitive match.
Second match result: Harwell and Hendred 3:1 Abingdon Youth
Team: Andrew Francis (GK), Liam Kay, Luke Hayes, Joe Lilley, Callum Rowe, Jacob Rackley, Charley Thomlinson (Lewis Thorne and Joe Fowler subs.)
Joe Lilley had an early shot saved and Jacob followed up well for the rebound putting the ball only narrowly wide. Charley showed great vision as he controlled the ball well deep in the Abingdon half laying it off for Callum whose shot whistled into the goal. Moments later it was again Charley the goal maker, this time passing to Joe who shot well to put the lads two up by half time.
Abingdon got stronger as the game went on causing some problems at the back. Jacob worked really hard down the left side of the pitch making his presence felt strongly. Lewis came on for Luke in a straight swap and did well. Nevertheless, the lads found themselves exposed at the back and Abingdon swooped to reduce the deficit by one. H and H responded well as Liam’s well taken free kick found Joe Lilley. His pass found Charley who was this time the scorer as he perfected his now trade mark turn and shoot. Joe Fowler came on for Charley and hassled the defenders well, cutting out their short goal kicks. Jacob hit the post late on and Liam had a couple of long range efforts, either just wide or well saved. The final whistle bought the wettest fixture for two years to an end.

Harwell and Hendred vs. Cholsey (League match)
Harwell and Hendred vs. Cholsey (League match)
First match result: Cholsey 3:1 Harwell and Hendred
Team sheet: Daniel Potter (GK), Liam Kay, Eddie Mackeller, Joe Lilley, Callum Rowe Jacob Rackley, Charley Hunt, Luke Hayes and Jack Sear (Subs.)
The first ten minutes of this fixture were not a pretty site. Cholsey were one up within 30 seconds from a slick passing move. Within two minutes they again threaded the ball through with great skill and blasted the ball home to double their advantage. The away support didn’t quite know what to do as they witnessed a third goal from a long shot. Was this going to be the start of a torrent of goals for the home side? Cholsey are a skilful and well organised team. They attacked in numbers and showed great discipline in getting numbers behind the ball when defending (I was given that one by someone who knows about this game!). However, as the half progressed the lads came more and more into the game and started to compete well in certain areas of the park. The work rate was notably higher than last week and it was this that kept that prevented an addition to the score line for the rest of the first half.
Liam looked pretty solid at the back (heading well in particular) defending for the first time with Eddie in the first half and then with Luke for the second half. Eddie moved to the left side of midfield replacing Jacob. Joe Lilley showed the way in the second half chasing everything to the last. The Joe and Callum club combined well on the right side of the pitch and it was perhaps from this side that any goals would come from. Cholsey continued to look threatening throughout the match and Daniel did well to keep things tidy for the remainder of the game. Midway into the second half it was a mix up at the back caused by Joe (the terrier) Lilley that saw the ball lob over the keeper for an own goal as the lads pulled one back. You could see the self-belief come back to the lads as they finished the match very strongly, perhaps not as the better side (though it was pretty even), but definitely the side looking the more hungry. Jack Sear got a late run out replacing Charley for the last couple of minutes of the match.
Second match result: Cholsey 0: 4 Harwell and Hendred
Team: Sam Bradley, Andrew Francis, Harry Page, Tom Craig, Thomas Carter, Liam Thomlinson, Elias Djaoui. Ethan Muldoon (Sub).
The result from the first match meant that this fixture was by no means settled. The lads started really brightly and with great purpose. A series of throw-ins from the left side culminated in Andrew’s throw into the area and Tom Craig on hand to spin round and bury the ball in the net to open the scoring for this match and to cut the overall deficit to one. Cholsey looked stunned by the this goal, but not as stunned as they were two minutes later as Andrew’s free kick from 5metres into the Cholsey half was launched like a looping torpedo and “exploded” into the top corner of the Cholsey goal to draw the aggregate score level. All the noise was coming from the away support as they encouraged the lads to keep the good work going. Cholsey came more into the match and Sam had to work hard to keep a clean sheet. Three minutes before half time an Andrew Francis throw into the area was again met by Tom Craig. I suspect he’d been watching too much Strictly Come Dancing as he showed fantastic acrobatics to put the ball into the net in the far corner. The away support was now verging on apoplectic as the lads were now one up on aggregate. Cholsey finished the half with a couple of good moves that were in the end dealt with well by HP and Thomas at the back. Sam made a cracking save and Liam T was on hand to block the rebound.
Jason must have given the lads the mother of all team talks at half time as the away supporters looked to hire Superman to spin the Earth around a bit quicker for the next 20 minutes. Cholsey started the second half the strongest and more organised. The team work shown by the lads was missing a bit in the early stages of the second half, but the level of effort was fantastic from most parts of the pitch. Thomas and HP were kept really busy at the back, but they provided the bedrock for the rest of the lads to keep pushing and threatening the Cholsey back line. Tom had a shot blocked from a corner. Was this a crucial point in the fixture? Some of the crowd thought so as at least 3 ambulances from the JR were on standby to deal with a surge of heart problems in the Cholsey area.
Time went so slowly, but the lads kept their heads and concentration so well. Ethan came on for Liam. With five minutes to go, Sam’s kick out found Tom running on to the ball and shoot low into the net to give a crucial two goal cushion. Oh, how the last few minutes went slowly, but the referee’s whistle finally went and the lad’s had pulled off a remarkable victory.
To put this victory in context, Cholsey had not lost in the league for one and a quarter seasons before today – a fantastic record they should be rightly proud of. The delight from all around was a great pleasure to witness, notably the smiles on the lad’s faces. The whole club wanted to send Mike and his family their very best wishes. I suspect the lad’s couldn’t have done more to make Mike proud of them all.

Harwell and Hendred vs. Grove (League match)
First match result: Harwell and Hendred 2:1 Grove
Team sheet: Team: Andrew Francis (GK), Liam Kay, Luke Hayes, Joe Lilley, Callum Rowe, Jacob Rackley, Charley Hunt. Ethan Muldoon (Sub.)
A close fought game got underway in really hot conditions. It was hard work on the field. The lads started off well with Charley battling back to win the ball in midfield and start a great move culminating in Callum’s great cross from the right side of the pitch. Joe was unlucky to see his shot go just wide.
Andrew (making his league debut in goal) launched a great kick out right through the centre. Joe ran on to the loose ball and buried the ball in the net to put the lad’s one up. Another couple of good moves soon followed started by either Liam or Luke at the back. Charley saw a header go just wide and Liam struck the ball sweetly only to see the shot saved.
Grove came more into the match just as Harwell and Hendred started to play some disjointed football. A throw in was only half cleared and the following shot went through a mass of bodies un-sighting the keeper to level the scores. The lad’s looked an effective unit going forward with chances from Joe, Callum, Charley and Jacob, but when Grove were on the break there were some definite issues with getting back. Half time was called with the scores level.
The second half started pretty brightly with Charley’s header going narrowly over the bar. A Grove break saw a foul given away just outside the area. The wall was well marshalled by Andrew and the shot although hit well went wide and high. The lads responded well as that missing ingredient kicked in so well as Callum came back and won the ball well in midfield. He launched a long shot that unfortunately the goalie slightly fumbled and Charley was on hand to put the ball into the net to restore the lead. Ethan came on for Jacob in a straight swap and soon was in the action as his shot was well saved by the keeper (and the rebound). The game concluded in near disaster as a Grove break at speed saw Andrew have to stand up well to a fiercely taken shot. A win for the lad’s, but some work to do in practice
Second match result: Harwell and Hendred 6:0 Grove
Team: Sam Bradley (GK), Harry Page, Thomas Carter, Tom Craig, Ethan Djaoui, Liam Thomlinson, Eddie Mackeller. Lewis Thorne (Sub.).
Despite the near sweltering conditions this match was played at a fantastic pace throughout the first half. Tom had a couple of early chances, but in the fifth minute Liam produced a cheeky pass to Eddie whose shot from distance found its way to the net. Tom produced some good work on the left side of the pitch and he put in a fantastic cross right across the front of the goal that didn’t quite get the finishing touch. A barrage of chances for Tom came and went, but when Elias put in a great pass just outside the area Tom struck the ball well to double the score line in this match. Almost immediately Eddie was on the ball mid way in the Grove half. He obviously smelt that goal as his shot went clean through to put the lad’s three up in this match. Thomas and HP kept Sam out of the game as they cleared up any loose balls or attacks well. Just before half time some good work by Thomas saw Tom and Elias combine well and culminate in Elias scoring on the point of the half time whistle.
It was always going to be difficult to maintain the momentum generated in the first half through to the second half. So it was as the pace of the match slowed markedly. Lewis came on for Liam and did well right from the start. Eddie found himself in range again and completed a great hatrick with the pick of his three goals from distance. Lewis made his presence felt on the right side of the pitch putting in maximum effort throughout and providing some great passes when the lads found themselves on the attack as well as winning crucial balls. His well timed pass to Elias saw a great save from the Grove keeper. The match concluded with some good work by Elias on the left hand side and he ran through to put bury the ball in the net.

Team sheet: Sam Bradley (GK), Thomas Carter, Harry Page, Liam Thomlinson, Elias Djaoui. Charley Hunt, Andrew Francis. Eddie Mackeller and Euan Springett (Subs).
It was important to bounce back following last week’s fixture. Mike, for some reason decided to take part in the Great North Run!, so it was down to Jason to look after the teams this week. Charley swapped teams this week and Eddie and Eaun made their debut starting on the subs bench. The lads started well dominating the early play, but within 5 minutes a Chalgrove player won the ball well in midfield, drove the ball down the pitch and took a great shot giving Sam no chance to open the scoring for the home side. This inspired the lads who started again to assert themselves on the pitch. Although the play was scrappy for long periods of the first half, Charley had a half chance with a header and confusion in the Chalgrove defence nearly led to an own goal. Andrew did well down the left side of the pitch. Three passes transformed the score as Charley did well to move the ball wide to Liam. Liam’s cross was put across the area and Elias was on hand to slot the ball home for the equaliser. Half time followed. Andrew came off for Eddie. Again the lads started the half well with Elias nearly producing the perfect through ball to Charley proving only to be inches too long. However, this time there was to be confusion in the visitors area as Sam’s clearance from a back pass rebounded into the goal to put the lads behind once more. Eddie did well on the left side feeding balls through to Charley and you felt this was going to be the main source of any equaliser. So it was, as Eddie’s ball through to Elias saw the cross find Charley. His neat turn and shot led to a deflection off Liam into the goal to level the scores for the second time in the match. Liam came off for Euan. Within a minute it was Eaun’s cross from the right side that saw Charley turn and shoot to put the visitors into the lead for the first time in the match. Two minutes a blocked goal kick saw Charley on hand to double his tally for the day. The game finished with the lads well on top despite the constant threat from the Chalgrove goal scorer.
Second match result: Chalgrove 3: 5 Harwell and Hendred
Team: Daniel Potter (GK), Liam Kay, Luke Hayes, Joe Lilley, Callum Rowe Tom Craig, Jacob Rackley. Lewis Thorne, Ethan Muldoon and Jack sear(Subs).
This team in particular had to show a bit of grit today. Jason prepped the team well, but despite this they found themselves one down from a long shot taken really well by a Chalgrove player playing on the right side of the pitch. Within two minutes Liam’s route one clearance up the pitch saw Joe show great strength to follow up and knock the ball in from close up to level the scores. Jacob had a shot saved within a minute of the restart. Tom did well on the right side to force a corner. Callum’s corner was inch perfect for Joe to bury the ball into the net to establish a first half lead. Chalgrove’s response bought out a brave save from Daniel. Luke shored up the right side of defence and did well to supply Callum up the wing during the rest of the half. A Chalgrove corner was well cleared by Liam. Callum’s persistency at the home team’s end led to some confusion and an own goal was the result. Not to be outdone, Chalgrove to advantage of some poor marking and their scorer doubled his tally with a great shot on the left side of the goal. The end to end stuff continued as Jacob’s persistence on the left side of the pitch saw a cross in for Callum to make the score to four, two in favour of the visitors. The half finished with a second brave save from Daniel.
Jason encouraged the lads at half time, but they found themselves conceding another goal early in the second half in an almost carbon copy of a previous Chalgrove goal. Ethan was on for Jacob in a straight swap and his smart lay off to Joe wide on the left saw Joe reaching for his pitching wedge as he launched a perfectly flighted ball into the top of the net. Jack came on for Luke at the back. The Chalgrove No. 8 was a constant menace, however, he never added to his tally. Lewis came on for Callum towards the end of the match. Liam had a shot saved following an H and H corner. Ethan’s well saved shot bought the fixture to the end.

Under 10's vs Ardington and Lockinge (Home match)
Harwell and Hendred vs. Ardington and Lockinge (League match)
First match result: Harwell and Hendred 1:2 Ardington and Lockinge
Team sheet: Sam Bradley (GK), Thomas Carter, Harry Page, Liam Thomlinson, Elias Djaoui. Tom Craig, Andrew Francis, Jack Sear (Sub).
The start of a really entertaining game of football saw both teams start brightly and competing for everything. The lads had the edge for the first few minutes without doubt. Soon after Sam dealt with a long shot confidently, Tom Craig and Elias found himself battling in the Ardington area with the result of a penalty awarded for handball. Tom Craig hit the ball low and to the right to open the scoring for the home team. Within a couple of minutes after some excellent defensive work from Thomas and HP, Elias and Tom combined well with Elias rounding two players and laying the ball off for Tom whose shot went tantalisingly across the face of the goal much to the agony of the home supporters. The lads competed so well for the rest of the half with maximum effort displayed throughout not letting Ardington settle in any way.
The second half started as well as the first, however, a free kick was awarded to Ardington mid way into the home team’s half. The crowd were weary of the impending shot. They were right to be weary as the shot came in and dipped late into the top of the goal – an inch perfect shot to level the scores. The lads were slightly rocked by this and in the next few minutes lost their shape, though never their commitment as Ardington started to knock the ball around well. Jack came on for Liam. Soon after an Ardington throw saw the ball knocked across the area and was put in to put the visitors 2-1 up. Within a minute Ardington burst through again and a penalty was awarded as the Ardington player was fouled on the ball. The ball was hit hard to the left; however, over 50 people witnessed what was an absolutely brilliant save from Sam Bradley to deny the visitors adding to the score. The game came to an end soon after a Tom Craig free kick was saved by the Ardington keeper.
There was general agreement that this was a fantastic game of football to watch with the effort and commitment shown a true example for their team mates.
Second match result: Harwell and Hendred 0:6 Ardington and Lockinge
Team: Daniel Potter (GK), Liam Kay, Luke Hayes, Joe Lilley, Callum Rowe Charley Hunt, Jacob Rackley, Joe Fowler (Sub).
The lads were playing up hill for the first half and started off well taking up the mantle from their team mates well. Ardington looked a well organised team, but some good defensive play tamed the threat and Daniel was on hand to make a series of good stops/saves. It wasn’t all Ardington though as Callum had a long shot well saved. It must be said though, that Ardington looked threatening every time they got the ball, but by half time the game remained goalless – a score that did the home team some great credit.
If ever there was a case of “it’s a game of two halves” – this was one of them. Quite frankly, Ardington were dominant in all areas during the second half. H and H kick outs, throw- ins all went straight to Ardington players and the lad’s positional play went down the tube! Ardington hit the post within a couple of minutes of the start of the second half. This was only a taster as they ripped the lads open for the rest of the match scoring almost at will as they appeared to have acres of space and bags of time to play their favoured style of football. Five goals were scored within eight minutes. Some of the lad’s heads dropped and the level of effort waned significantly. A sixth goal towards the end of the match put the icing on the cake for the visitors. Charley nearly had a consolation goal, though the keeper did well the smother the ball.

Crowmarsh vs. Harwell and Hendred (League match)
First match result: Crowmarsh 1:1 Harwell and Hendred
Team sheet: Sam Bradley (GK), Thomas Carter, Harry Page, Liam Thomlinson, Elias Djaoui. Tom Craig, Andrew Francis
The boys were looking forward to the first league fixture of the season. Liam T was making his league debut for the team playing on the right side of the pitch. The lads dominated the game from the start with some fantastic passing football. Tom Craig had an early chance from an Andrew Francis throw and a great passage of play culminated in a long shot from HP, just wide of the target. Thomas Carter looked rock solid at the back throughout the match. Liam had an impact straight away with some great play on the right side of the pitch providing a pin point accurate cross which saw Elias’s shot well saved. Soon after Liam’s corner saw Elias’s shot this time hit the post and go safe.
Crowmarsh came more into the game and Sam was on good form as he dealt with a couple of threats pretty comfortably. The, despite the possession ration of 95:5 in favour of the away team, a corner from Crowmarsh exposed some poor marking and there was little Sam could do as the ball was drilled into the net to put the home team one up.
Normal service resumed with the away team dominating play. There was a degree of nervousness in the away supporters as a series of shots from Liam and Elias rattled the post or was saved. Was it going to be one of those days? The referee blew to call half-time. Mike heaped praise on his players promising them that if they continued to play as well for the rest of the time, they would get a result from this match.
The second half commenced with some good work from Tom Craig which saw his well struck shot saved. Crowmarsh responded with a great cross put into the area that saw Andrew in the right position to defend well. The Liam/Elias combination worked well again as Elias’s header was well saved after a great cross from Liam. Tom’s great work saw a cross into the Crowmarsh area that was nearly put in by the home team. Then, relief all round for the away support as Andrew’s corner was buried by Elias to level the scores in an almost carbon copy of the Crowmarsh goal.
The match was played out with great urgency from both sides, though neither of them could find the winner.
Second match result: Crowmarsh 0:2 Harwell and Hendred
Team: Daniel Potter (GK), Liam Kay, Luke Hayes, Joe Lilley, Callum Rowe Charley Hunt and Jacob Rackley (sub. Lewis Thorne)
Charley was making his league debut. With the fixture still in the balance, Mike impressed upon the boys the need to play well right from the start of the game. He wasn’t disappointed as the Crowmarsh keeper had to make a great save within two minutes of the start. Some excellent play between Callum, Charley and Joe promised great things this season up front. Daniel’s long kick out almost saw Callum through (who said route one football was dead?) and a series of corners piled the pressure on the opposition. Crowmarsh found their feet and started to play well. Liam Kay had to be on top form to make a great covering tackle when the home team burst through. Luke and Liam looked pretty solid at the back and this provided the platform for the rest of the team to attack in numbers when the opportunity allowed. Joe had a shot from a wide position saved off the line by a Crowmarsh defender. Within a couple of minutes the lads won a corner. The ball came out to Liam mid way in the Crowmarsh half. His shot was accurate and hard, though blocked well. The rebound came out to Joe, whose shot was pumped into the net with great accuracy and power, opening the scoring in this match and putting the lads ahead in the aggregate score of the fixture for the first time. Half time followed soon after.
After a slightly wobbly first minute the lads settled down and Jacob had a shot saved. This lead to a series of corners. Charley had a cool head in the area, controlling the ball well and laying it off for his team mates to put the final touch to – though the goal never came. Callum then had a couple of long range shots either just high or just wide. Crowmarsh pressed again and Daniel saved really well on at least two occasions to keep his teams slender, one goal advantage intact. Jacob came more into the match towards the close and he was unlucky as his header from a great cross was just inches over the bar. Minutes later, the match was made safe as some good work on the right saw Callum’s cross put right across the area and Jacob on hand to slot the ball home.
Lewis came on for Jacob for the final couple of minutes with instructions to man mark a Crowmarsh forward. Not one inch of light was evident between them as he did exactly what he was asked.
Crowmarsh threatened right to the end though Daniel was on hand to ensure a clean sheet as the final whistle went soon after.
